Experian has launched a UK credit score app within ChatGPT, allowing consumers to access information about their Experian credit score through a conversation with the AI platform.
The service could be particularly useful for people who have recently moved to the UK and are learning how the UK credit system works. Credit history can influence whether someone is accepted for products including credit cards, loans and mortgages, and newcomers to the country may have little or no UK credit history when they arrive.
Experian scores consumers on a scale of 0 to 1,250. The company is one of the UK’s three main credit reference agencies, alongside Equifax and TransUnion.
The ChatGPT integration gives users another way to access and understand their Experian credit information without navigating separately through Experian’s website or app.
“Consumers expect financial experiences to be as intuitive as the technology they use every day,” Debbie Hsu, executive vice president of product at Experian Consumer Services, said in announcing the integration.
Why this matters if you’ve recently moved to the UK
Moving to the UK does not automatically give someone an established UK credit history. Credit reference agencies build their records using information available in the UK, including credit accounts, payment history, and public records.
That can leave recent arrivals with a limited credit file even if they previously used financial products in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, or elsewhere.
A limited credit history does not necessarily mean someone has poor credit. It can simply mean lenders have less UK information available to assess them.
Checking your credit report can therefore be useful when establishing yourself financially in the UK. It allows you to see what information is being recorded about you and identify errors that may need correcting.
Checking your own Experian credit score does not reduce the score.
How to check your Experian credit score through ChatGPT
Step 1: Open ChatGPT
- Sign in to ChatGPT on desktop or mobile and locate the Experian Credit Score app.
- Make sure you are using Experian’s official app before providing or connecting any personal financial information.
Step 2: Start your request
Open the Experian app and ask to see or understand your credit score. You can use one of the suggested prompts or enter your own question.
Step 3: Verify your identity
- Accessing personalised credit information requires authentication. Follow Experian’s verification process and provide the necessary consent to connect your account.
- Once verification is complete, you can return to ChatGPT to access information about your Experian credit score.
What your score does—and doesn’t—tell you
An Experian score can help you understand how your credit profile looks, but it does not determine whether every lender will accept you.
Banks and other financial providers have their own lending criteria and may use information from different credit reference agencies when considering an application. A score shown by Experian can therefore differ from the information or score available through Equifax or TransUnion.
For someone starting to build a financial record in the UK, the more useful starting point is understanding what appears on the credit report, making sure the information is accurate and building a consistent UK credit history over time.
The ChatGPT integration makes accessing some of that information easier. The underlying rules of the UK’s credit system remain the same.
