TechDisrupt (“we”, “us”, “our”) publishes news and analysis on African and diaspora technology, startups and funding for a UK audience at techdisrupt.co.uk. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you visit this site or contact us, why we collect it, and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Who we are
TechDisrupt is a UK-focused online publication. For any question about this policy or your personal data, contact us at editor@techdisrupt.co.uk.
Data we collect
Analytics data
We use Google Site Kit (which runs Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use this site: pages viewed, time spent, device and browser type, approximate location derived from your IP address, and how you arrived at the site. Google Analytics uses cookies to do this. This data is processed by Google and may be transferred outside the UK, including to the United States, under Google’s standard contractual clauses. See Google’s Privacy Policy for details of how Google handles this data.
Enquiries and news tips
When you email us (for example at editor@techdisrupt.co.uk) with a news tip, correction, partnership enquiry or general question, we process the personal data you choose to include — typically your name, email address and the content of your message — in order to respond to you. Please do not send us passwords, payment details or other sensitive personal information by email.
Server and security logs
Like most websites, our hosting infrastructure automatically records technical data such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, for security, fraud prevention and troubleshooting purposes.
Cookies
This site uses cookies set by Google Analytics to measure traffic and usage, as described above. We do not currently use cookies for advertising or to build marketing profiles.
Our legal basis for processing
- Legitimate interests — to understand and improve how the site performs, and to keep it secure.
- Consent — where required for non-essential cookies.
- Legitimate interests / taking steps at your request — to respond when you contact us.
How long we keep data
Analytics data is retained in line with Google Analytics’ standard retention settings. Emails and enquiries are kept for as long as needed to handle the matter and for a reasonable period afterward for our records.
Sharing your data
We do not sell personal data. We share data with Google, as our analytics processor, and with the service providers who host this site and handle our email, only as needed to operate TechDisrupt.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Ask what personal data we hold about you and request a copy (right of access)
- Ask us to correct inaccurate data (right to rectification)
- Ask us to delete your data (right to erasure)
- Ask us to restrict how we use your data (right to restriction)
- Object to our processing (right to object)
- Request your data in a portable format (right to data portability)
To exercise any of these rights, email editor@techdisrupt.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), if you believe we have not handled your data properly.
Children’s privacy
TechDisrupt is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13.
