J.P. Morgan plugs into Thunes to reach Nigeria, Kenya, and 100+ payment corridors

J.P. Morgan Payments has announced a partnership with global B2B payment infrastructure company Thunes to expand its international payout network. Under the agreement, J.P. Morgan will integrate Thunes’ infrastructure to power Xpedite Remit, its cross-border solution designed to accelerate real-time payouts to bank accounts and mobile wallets globally.

Initial rollout markets include key emerging economies such as Nigeria and Kenya (alongside India, Mexico, Brazil, and Bangladesh). As the UK continues to embrace its vibrant, expanding global diaspora cultures, the UK-Africa remittance corridor remains a vital economic lifeline, routing billions of pounds annually into economic powerhouses including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.

While the J.P. Morgan integration marks a leap forward for institutional finance, Thunes is far from a newcomer to the continent. One of its success stories in Africa was connecting PayPal directly to Safaricom’s M-Pesa in Kenya, allowing millions of Kenyan businesses, freelancers, and diaspora members to move money between a global digital account and a local mobile wallet in seconds.

The narrative around global finance has been straightforward: legacy banking giants build proprietary correspondent networks, and the rest of the world adapts to them. This move by J.P. Morgan Payments to plug its Xpedite Remit infrastructure directly into Thunes’ Direct Global Network tells a very different story. Adopting native infrastructure rather than rebuilding it from scratch is a gold standard for money movement.

The integration significantly expands J.P. Morgan’s transaction footprint, granting corporate clients access to Thunes’ network of over 12 billion endpoints. The system covers more than 100 payment corridors, enabling businesses to send payouts securely to regions that traditionally experience transaction friction.

Operating on a 24/7 basis, the network is built to handle instantaneous cross-border settlement. Clients can utilise a single J.P. Morgan account to initiate payments, bypassing traditional multi-layered correspondent banking pathways to achieve real-time liquidity management.

The Xpedite Remit solution introduces enhanced flexibility for global foreign exchange (FX) management. Corporate treasurers can execute payouts either in the source currency or choose automated currency conversions directly at the time of transaction.

To address security and cross-border regulatory compliance, the network includes built-in principal-protection protocols. Additionally, the platform provides end-to-end data tracking, offering corporate senders full visibility into the lifecycle and current status of each transaction.

Company executives noted that the partnership reflects a growing corporate demand for consumer-like speed, safety, and transparency in high-volume, international business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) payments.

The platform also offers transparent, automated foreign exchange (FX) conversions at the exact point of transaction. Senders gain full end-to-end traceability, eliminating the anxiety of lost transfers by allowing both the sender and recipient to track the transaction lifecycle in real time.
