UK Opens £600,000 Funding Call for University-Linked AI Startups

Responsible AI UK (RAi UK), which supports the development and adoption of responsible artificial intelligence, is offering a total of £600,000 in funding through a new initiative backed by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

UK-based AI startups emerging from university research or accelerator programmes can apply for individual awards of up to £50,000 and exceptional applications eligible for up to £75,000 to help research-led startups reach technical and commercial milestones.

The funding comes as the UK seeks to strengthen its AI ecosystem by supporting the translation of research into commercial products and technologies.

The funding call is designed to help early-stage ventures move research and early product development towards demonstrable technical or market readiness, and RAi UK expects to make approximately 10 awards.

What the funding covers

Successful applicants must use the funding to achieve a clearly defined technical, product or validation milestone by March 31, 2027.

Eligible activities could include developing a working prototype, releasing a product, validating a dataset or demonstrating that a technology addresses a gap in the market.

Applicants must also demonstrate that their ventures are distinctive and have credible growth potential. They can do this through one of two routes: evidence of customer commitment or follow-on investment, or evidence that their underlying technology addresses a problem existing alternatives do not adequately solve.

The programme is open to ventures operating across eight sectors identified in the UK government’s Industrial Strategy: advanced manufacturing, clean energy industries, creative industries, defence, digital and technologies, financial services, life sciences, and professional and business services.

RAi UK is particularly interested in proposals involving sustainable AI, methods for assessing the costs and benefits of AI deployment, AI skills development, and engineering approaches that improve the safety, security, and reliability of AI systems.

Who can apply?

The call targets startups and spinouts that have either emerged directly from research conducted at a UK university or participated in a UK university accelerator, incubator, or equivalent venture-development programme.

Applicants must be UK-registered entities capable of incurring expenses and accounting for the award. The named venture lead must also be a resident of the UK and hold a role in the company beyond the proposed funded activity.

Although ventures associated with RAi UK partner programmes are eligible, applicants do not need to have participated in a specific RAi UK accelerator.

The programme particularly encourages applications from early-career researchers, ventures outside established research and investment hubs, and founding teams that broaden participation in the UK’s responsible AI ecosystem.

Funding conditions and deadlines

The £600,000 fund provides awards of up to £50,000 as standard, with requests of up to £75,000 considered only in exceptional circumstances. Matched funding is not compulsory, although evidence of committed private investment may strengthen an application.

The funding is paid in arrears against evidenced expenditure, meaning recipients must spend the money before claiming reimbursement. Applicants should therefore ensure they have sufficient working capital to deliver their proposed milestones.

All funded activity must be completed, and eligible expenditure incurred, by March 31, 2027. The award is also subject to the UK’s Minimal Financial Assistance rules, including a £315,000 limit across the relevant financial period.

The deadline to register an intention to apply is October 12, 2026. Full applications must be submitted by October 14, 2026.

Eligible startups can review the requirements and submit their applications through the Responsible AI UK Venture Top-Ups funding call.
